LETTER: Otsego Lodge, No. 534,
I.O.O.F. Otsego, Mich. September 19, 1922. Mr. James A. Latta: Having
gone through all
records attainable here at Otsego and Allegany and corresponding with nearly all of
the older residents that knew your family. I have been able to collect the following
data for you. The obituaries of your father and grandfather I suppose you have
but following such information as they gave. I have succeeded in tracing their
birth places to Rochester, New York State, but have been unable, at this time, to
find exact data of your grandfather's birth. Your great grandfather's (?) name
is Samuel Latta. He settled in the town of Rochester, New York State in 1797.
Rochester was incorporated into a city in 1828 by the consolidation of two towns
called Greece Center and Read's Corners. As all settlers nearly came from
Vermont, should advise looking through Vermont State records.--Robert E. Smith, Sec'y

* Note by Robert H. Latta*
I do not think that Samuel Latta, the supposed head of this
branch belongs to this branch. He belongs to branch No. 4, and I do not connect
him in any way with this branch. I put him here because Mr. Robert E. Smith,
wrote to James Alexander Latta, that Samuel was his ancestor.
Information furnished by James A. Latta and Jennie Ruth
Walsh.
