                                           1 JOHN (1) LATTA
     Born: Abt 1657. at Bready, St. Johnston, Londonderry, Ireland.  Died: Nov. 28, 1725. there.   Married Mary Steen, She was born about 1669 and died Aug. 24, 1758. It is said that the Irish branches of the Latta family all came from here or immediate vicinity. Three of his children were:

17    JAMES (2) physician in the American army during the Revolutionary war.  It is said that
the U.S. Government gave him a large tract of land on which was an indigo plantation.  He wrote home, sent his brothers money, and spoke of bringing them to America, but he wanted to see his land first.  Two years passed, no word arriving, one of John's sons was sent to hunt him.  Uncle and nephew were never heard from again.  The plantation was thought to have been in N.C.

Bready in 1862; m. Elizabeth Bruce Lockhart, sister to his sister Jane's husband, at Bready in
1851.  She was born at Glasgow, Scotland March 16, 1827 and died at Ballycarney Farms,
Ballinakill, Co. Wexford,. Ireland. Nov. 23, 1901. Children:

Died: March 27, 1955.   In 1898 he was living at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In 1937 at 2413 Lonsdale Ave. No. Vancouver, B.C. Canada. He had been a Mounted Policeman.   Now (1930's) a dealer in wholesale heavy hardware. His children died at Edmonton, Canada.

Biography: by Alex Latta, Jr.

    David was born at Ballinakill, the family farm near Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, Ireland. The second youngest of seven sibblings.  By the time he was sixteen he had heard of the "free farms" offered in Canada so he ran away from home to seek his fortune.  His mother never forgave him, and never spoke to him again.  David left for Canada when he was 18 years old but, where he was for the previous two years we do not know.  He arrived in Quebec and went to Whitemouth, Manitoba where his brother William had established a homestead.  After a few months here he joined the Canadian Northwest Mounted Police. While stationed at Battleford, Saskatchewan he married Jessie Wuttanee, a native girl from the Red Pheasant Indian reserve.  After three years he bought his discharge RNMP and bought a farm near Sonningdale, Saskatchewan, and started raising sheep.  After being burned out for three consecutive years by prairie fires he decided to sell out and move to Alberta with the intension that he might go to the Gold Fields of the Yukon.  However, opportunities were good so he stayed.  By 1900 he had started his own blacksmith business and was doing well. In 1897 his second child was born but his wife passed away.  A niece of his wife was staying with them to assist with the children.  He married her (my grandmother) and had ten more children. Two died in infancy.  Blacksmith supplies were difficult to acquire because of the great distance from suppliers, so he went into wholesale distribution of Blacksmith supplies, Iron and Steel and heavy hardware.  This was a successful business, and in 1933 he retired, moving to North Vancouver, B.C., enjoying 15 years of retirement in which time he raised prize collies.  David had a stroke in January, 1948, and was removed to Edmonton to be cared for at the home of his son Alex, Sr.  He passed away November 11, 1948.  I never had the presence of mind to ask him a single question.  I guess it was because I was too busy chasing his nurses. (I caught one.)
