Branch 17? John Latta of Branch 17 also has sons named William, George,
John. Was Moses Latta of Br. 43 a brother to John Latta of Branch 17?
He also has sons named William and John, and has ties to Huntingdon County where
John Latta of Branch 17 lived. John Latta, head of Branch 17, had a
son-in-law named Isaac Burns who also migrated to Iowa.
2 JOHN (2) LATTA
John (1). Born in Ireland in 1722; d. in 1798 in
Westmoreland Co., Pa. Came to America
before the Revolutionary War. Was a Captain in that war. Three sons

1717
married before 1720 to Mary Dunwoodie. He died 1736 and she administered his estate.
She died in 1766 and in her Will mentions her eldest son, Edward and his children.
Among them was Mary, wife of John Latta. Westmoreland PA Letters of

(Bondsman: David Sheerer). Also found were: Wilson, William (Jan. 18, 1799) to

Children:
3 GEORGE (3) b. Feb. 11, 1769 in Westmoreland
Co., PA; d. April 7, 1855 in Perry Co., Ohio.
4 JOHN (3) Married: Margaret " Peggy" Story.

May 19, 1838. (Marriage record from
the family records of John Friedell of P.O. Box 293 Shell Lake WI 54871)
The Ephraim Latta who married Mary Thompson is found in
Branch 3. That Ephraim Latta had a different father than this Ephraim, so
it is doubtful that this Ephraim is the one who married Mary Thompson.
7 MOSES (3) b. bef. 1760 (If these men
fought in the Rev. War with their father, they would have to have been born
before 1760 to be of the right age.
8 MARY (3).
There is a tombstone in the St. Luke's Reformed Presbyterian
Cemetery, Unity Township, Westmoreland County, PA for Moses Latta, died Feb. 14,
1848, aged 30 years (GAR Marker). There are also tombstones for Latta, Elizabeth

Elizabeth C., died Oct. 21, 1864, aged 65 years, 5 months, 28 days "Precious in
the sight of the Lord is the death of the righteous", and Latta, John, Jan. 26,
1790, Oct. 15, 1872, aged 82 years, 3 months, 19 days.
None of these people seem to fit into the family
above, so probably belong to another branch of Lattas from Westmoreland County,
PA.

Commander Latta Reported Missing
Son of Former Morning Sun Man
Commander Frank Latta, son of Ray Latta and grandson of J.K. Latta, has been
listed as missing in action in a navy department message to his wife, a resident
of Burlington.
Holder of the navy cross for extraordinary heroism and formerly commander of the
famous submarine "Old Girl." Commander Latta has a brilliant record in naval
service. It was as the second officer to be in command of the "Old Girl" that
Latta took a leading part in directing the submarine on many of the adventures
that are now being recorded serially in the Saturday evening Post.
He was in command of the submarine which had the distinction of firing the first
shot at Tokoyo and much of his service in the present war has been submarine
duty in the offshore waters of Japan, Commander Latta was in charge of salvage
operations at Pearl Harbor after the disastrous Japanese strike there. IN
addition to the navy cross Latta wears campaign ribbons of the American and
Pacific war theaters, the submarine combat pin, submarine service pin and stars
for several major battles. He is a graduate of Burlington, Iowa high school,
Burlington Junior College and the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis with
the class of 1932.
Commander Latta visited here with his grandparents about a year ago, and at that
time he was enroute to a northern lake port to take charge of the launching of
another submarine which he was to command. In February of this year J.K. Latta
received a letter from the 37 year old commander in which he told something of
his current work and voices praises for the crew then under his command. Mr.
Latta is the father of two boys, Mike and Pat, who with their mother, reside in
Burlington. Ray Latta, Commander Latta's father, died about five years ago.
