that Martha Warden m. "John Latta" on Sept. 13, 1810. She was born
Oct.
14, 1782
in Mt.
Pleasant,
Westmoreland
Co., PA,
a daughter of Samuel and Mary (Clark) Warden of E. Huntington Tp., Pa.
Martha Latta is buried in the Rehoboth Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Belle
Vernon, PA. The tombstone states that she was born in 1786 and died Apr.
7,
1817, at the age of 31 y. William Latta
mentions in his Will his wife, Martha Warden. The Will was probated on January 1, 1815. He claimed
relationship with Daniel Boone. With three brothers he came to America and
settled in Monongahala Valley near Belle Vernon (Fayette County), Pa. and the brick house he lived in
Roscoe, Pa. was standing in 1935. In the 1790 Census for PA, William Latta
is listed in Fayette County in Tyrone Twp., (3-6-5-0-0).

William (2) William (1). Born near Belle Vernon, Pa.
April 5, 1816; d. at W. Elizabeth, Pa. June 17, 1881 in West Elizabeth, PA; m. Mary Jane Gibenor at
Elizabeth, Pa., daughter of John and Sarah (Price) Gibenor. She died at
Wilkinsburg, Pa. April 17, 1901. William, at the age of 16, worked several
years at Bells Vernon. Learned the boat building trade. Later he worked
at Cincinnati, Ohio, then went to Alabama and built his first boat at Honeycomb
Valley, Ala. In 1843 commenced business at Monongahela, Pa. and a few years
later at California, Pa. He bought the Elizabeth, Pa. yard. Then returned
to Monongahela and carried on business at both places. He built boats for the
government and private persons during the year. He lived at Monongahela, later
moved to Elizabeth, then to W. Elizabeth, where he died. The history of boat
building in Monongahela Valley was published in the Elizabeth Herald in June 1900.

"William Latta, at age 18, entered
the boat yard at Belle Vernon, Pa., and learned the trade of boat building,
working there for several years. Later he worked at Cincinnati, Ohio, and then
went to Alabama and built his first boat at a place called Honeycomb Valley. In
1843 he embarked in the business at Monongahela, Pa, and a few years later was
interested in a yard at California, Pa. He had charge of the Belle Vernon yard.
Then returned to Monongahela, Pa. He bought the Elizabeth, Pa. yard and carried
on boat building at both places. He built boats for the government and for many
individuals, during the war, and resided at Monongahela, Pa. Later he moved to
Elizabeth, from there to West Elizabeth, where he died. The history of boat
building in the Monongahela Valley was published in the Elizabeth Herald in June

Wilkinsburg of "general Breakdown or heart failure, age 83."

Latta born 1860 in New Eagle, Pa. He had two sisters, Imogene and Des. Imogene
was a seamstress in their home and never married. Des kept house for her and
never married. Lived and died in Wilkinsburg, Pa. No one seems to have any more
background on them. Took your mother and dad (CB Sr. and Olga M. Latta) to visit
them in 1932

Service WWI: 29th Engineers. Enlisted in Reserve Corps in May and was called up
on Oct 3, 1917. Filled out a brief journal (in possession of C.B. Latta, Jr.)
provided by to servicemen by First National Bank of McKeesport, with following
facts:
At Fort Slocum, New Rochelle, NY: "Had it
easy at Fort Slocum, no uniform, no drills, no fatigue duty. Just lived the life
of Reilly as long as the dice were nice to me."
Boarded the Agememnon at Hoboken, NJ on
Oct. 29, 1917. Sailed on Oct. 31. On Nov. 9, the ship was rammed by the Von
Stueben and "almost sent us to the bottom--the YMCA Testaments certainly got a
big play as the boys started to realize we were darned lucky." Ship arrived in
Brest, France Nov. 12, 1917. Following places listed as having been located
(his spellings): St. Nazaire, Grevies, Isurtelle, Lagney (north of Toul),
Baccarat on hill above town; Bernecourt, Pannes, Essey, all north of Toul on
hill opposite Montsie (?) Thiacourt (?).
Mentions coming under shell fire and
bombed by airplane with Army troops in Toul and Bacaret Sectors. Further listing
of service: " St. Mihiel, Sept 12-18, 1918. Baccarat Sector during summer, Toul
Sector to the end of the war, 1918, and up to first of year when went to
railroad head by truck, to Sorcy and then by train to Bourge-sur-Grande near
Bordeaux"
"One thirty hour
pass in Jan. 1919 was only pass over a few hours ever received, tho I put in for
almost every time for leave when it was announced."
"Always a buck private in rear rank."
March 2, 1919, boarded Calamaris at Bordeaux. " Landed in New York March 12,
1919 and landed in Camp Dix on March 13, 1919 and received discharged from the
army on March 21, 1919 and landed home that day." WWI Draft

Clifford graduated from the Kentucky Military Institute in 1946,
Washington and Lee University in 1950, and from the University of Kentucky
College of Law in 1954. He began his career practicing law with his
grandfather, Andrew J. May, in Prestonsburg, KY, and continued to practice
in Prestonsburg for over 50 years. He was a lifetime member of the
Kentucky Bar Association, the American Bar Association, member and former
President of the Floyd County Bar Association, and a member of the Phi Delta
legal fraternity. He was a member of the Kentucky State Senate, where he
served a term as chairman of the State Government Committee. He served as
City Attorney of Prestonsburg from 1964 to 1968, and was the first chairman of
the Big Sandy Area Development Board, later the Big Sandy Area Development
District. He was a member of the Prestonsburg Community College
Development Foundation, former member and past President of the Prestonsburg
Kiwanis Club, former Executive Director of the Prestonsburg Municipal Housing
Commission. He was Senior Vice President and a member of the Board of
Directors of the First Commonwealth Bank of Prestonsburg. He was a
faithful member of the Irene Cole Memorial Baptist Church for almost 70 years.
