 2 WILLIAM (2) LATTA


William (1). Born ____; married three times. In his son, William's obituary, it stated that William was the father of 14 children.  He married two sisters named Corwin.  There was a James Corwin born abt. 1800 in PA (wife Sarah) who was a boat builder/carpenter in Belle Vernon in 1870.  Also a Barnett Corwin who was a boat builder. May have been related, although no records have been found of any Corwin women marrying a Latta.  Willam then married Martha Warden. She was born in 1782, daughter of Samuel and Mary (Clark) Warden at Mt. Pleasant, PA.  Samuel Warden was born abt. 1745 in County Donegal, Ireland.  William mentions in his Will his wife, Martha Warden, in January 1, 1815. He claimed relationship with Daniel Boone. With three brothers he came to America and settled in Monongahela Valley near Belle Vernon, Pa. and the brick house he lived in Roscoe, Pa. was standing in 1935.

13 MARY (3). She was born September 7, 1811; d. in 1887; m. John Speers, son of Henry Speers, Jr., and grandson of Henry Speers. The Speers family founded Belle Vernon, PA.   Children: William Henry, Rebecca, Sarah, Martha Isabel, John Frye, George Warden, Mary Ellen, and Maria Lucretia.

4 WILLIAM JOHN (3) LATTA


William (2) William (1). Born near Belle Vernon, Pa. April 3, 1818; d. at W. Elizabeth, Pa. June 17, 1881; m. Mary Jane Gibenor at Elizabeth, Pa., daughter of John and Sarah (Price) Gibenor.  In the Latta family Bible, she is listed as Mary Jane Stewart.  May have married a Stewart before or after her marriage to William Latta.  Note: Roland Stewart Latta.  Could he have been a child from the Stewart marriage?  Mary Jane died at Wilkinsburg, Pa. April 17, 1901. William, at the age of 16, worked several years at Bells Vernon. Learned the boat building trade. Later he worked at Cincinnati, Ohio, then went to Alabama and built his first boat at Honeycomb Valley, Ala. In 1843 commenced business at Monongahela, Pa. and a few years later at California, Pa. He bought the Elizabeth, Pa. yard. Then returned to Monongahela and carried on business at both places. He built boats for the government and private persons during the year. He lived at Monongahela, later moved to Elizabeth, then to W. Elizabeth, where he died after accidentally cutting his leg and developing blood poisoning. The history of boat building in Monongahela Valley was published in the Elizabeth Herald in June 1900.  In 1853, Louis M. Speer, Esq., son of Naoh Speer, founder of Belle Vernon, built a sawmill with partner,William Latta, a boat builder, below the mouth of Speers Run.  It was destroyed by fire in 1877 and rebuilt by his son, William F. Speer.

15 DELIA GRAVILLA (4) b. at W. Elizabeth, Pa. February 16, 1848; d. July 1934. In 1932 lived at Wilkinsburg, Pa. Was a Kindergarten teacher.

William (3) William (2) William (1). Born July 7, 1860 at Monongahela City, Pa.; d. April 25, 1947; buried in the McKeesport-Versailles Cemetery, McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; m. Sarah Ann Beedle on June 1884 at Castle Shannon, Pa. She was born October 20, 1865 at Lostoc, Pa, the daughter of Evan Beedle and Sarah Ann Hodgson.  Evan Beedle  was born in Wales in 1835 and immigrated to America in 1850, where he engaged in coal mining.  He and his wife, Sarah Ann are also buried in the McKeesport-Versailles Cemetery, Allegheny Co., PA  Roland and Sarah lived in Jones Station in Jefferson Township, Allegheny Co., PA. (A Genealogical and Biographical History of Allegheny Co, PA by Thomas Cushing, page 760.)

Rowland S. (4) William (3) William (2) William (1). Born September 6, 1886, at Hillsdale, Pa.; d. February 14, 1972; m. Bertha Elva Baker January 3, 1916, (also seen Jan. 5, 1916) at Pittsburg, Pa. She was born January 23, 1890 at McKeesport, Pa, and died in 1951. She was the Daughter of Aaron Andrew Jackson Baker and Mary F Miller. In 1932 news dealer at McKeesport, Pa. (Latta News Company? of White Oak, Pennsylvania). On his WWI draft card, it lists Charles Emmet Latta, 952 Franklin St., McKeesport, PA, age 55, place of birth - Elizabeth, self employed, 5'8", 150 lb, grey hair, blue eyes, nearest relative - Bertha Latta.  Buried in the McKeesport-Versailles Cemetery, McKeesport, Allegheny County, PA.

She was born January 28, 1893 at Pittsburg, Pa. In 1932 he lived at McKeesport, Pa. Dealer in wall paper. Served in France in World War.   On his WWI draft card, he is listed as Raymond S. Latta, 113 5th Avenue, McKeesport, PA, self employed, 5'8", 170 lbs, blue eyes, blond hair, and his nearest relative was Charles E. Latta (his brother), 952 Franklin St., McKeesport, PA.  On June 25, 1945, he married Beulah Fagley Vensel, daughter of William Fagley and Sarah Ross Fagley in Allegheny County, PA.  She died April 8, 1952.  They are both buried in the McKeesport-Versailles Cemetery, McKeesport, Allegheny County, PA.

Rowland S. (4) William (3) William (2) William (1). Born August 11, 1891 at McKeesport, Pa.; d. April 5, 1940; m. Olga Hager May, daughter of Andrew May and Julia Mayo, on June 6, 1925 at Cincinnati, Ohio. She was born August 27, 1902 at Prestonburg, Ky. Clifford was a 1910 graduate of McKeesport High School. In 1932 lived at Prestonburg, Ky. Printer. Served in France in the World War I in the 29th Engineers.  Buried in the McKeesport-Versailles Cemetery, McKeesport, Allegheny County, PA.

The McKeesport High School 1909 football team lists "Bim" Latta and "Giz" Latta.  Notes at the bottom of the photo state that "Bim" Latta has a position with the Ordinance Department of the United States Government in Washington, D.C.  "Giz" Latta was listed as being in the coal business near Bluefield, WV.  Evan served in France during World War I. In 1932 held government position at Washington, D.C.

Clifford attended Washington & Lee University, and the University of Kentucky Law School in Lexington, KY.  He entered the practice of law with his grandfather, Andrew Jackson May.
