Read owned the stone quarries there. Joseph left the Read's and
purchased the "Old Latta Homestead" in the 1800's at River Hebert, N.S. Canada. Married: Elizabeth
McMorris (Also seen as "Morris"). She was
born

in Ireland. She
died on
April 8, 1844,
at the

yrs.,
and is
also buried
in the
Trinity
Cemetery, River Herbert. She was the

LATTA, Jean Cochrane - 93, a long-time resident of Dartmouth, passed away
quietly in Halifax on January 30, 2006, with family by her side. She lived a
long and graceful life and was truly an angel on Earth. Jean had an arm for
bowling, enjoyed knitting and the Lexicon, and had a passion about penguins.
She taught school for a number of years and attended Christ Church (Anglican)
in Dartmouth. Born in Brooklyn, Hants Co., to Jehu and Edith
Ward, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been
predeceased by sisters, Pauline (Georgie), Esther, Lena and Rita, and brothers,
Gordon and Melvin. She was also predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Alan M.
Latta, and is survived by daughters, Mary Elizabeth (Keith) MacKay, Halifax,
and Judy (Ray Feeney) Latta, Garden City, NY;
grandchildren, Laura (Mitch), Kate (Mike), Keith (Sherry), Elizabeth
(Tony), Evan (Lauren), and Heather; and great-grandchildren, Talis and
Keith. Visitation in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax, 2-4 and
7-9 p.m. Friday. Funeral service in Christ Church, Dundas Street, Dartmouth,
11 a.m. Saturday, with reception to follow. Committal will take place in
the spring in River Hebert Cemetery.
