"It cannot be determined which persons were the first settlers as none moved to their purchases until about ten years after the entries were made. Mr. Hugh M. John and his brother, William, were the first to live in Franklin Township, Owen Co. The history of Owen Co. Lists John as having served on the first grand jury in May of 1819. Married: Jane McCroskey, July 12, 1814. She was Born: Feb. 27, 1795. 8 children;

*From the records of Lisa Mast; Around 1817, William purchased 285 acres in Township No. 9, Range 4, Owen Co., (Ind?) William and his brother, John, were the first to live in Franklin Township, Owen Co. Mr. Hugh M. Light, the oldest living settler in the Township at the "present time", (Not sure of when this statement was made, The "present time" could be any time.) states that William committed one of the unforgivable sins of the frontier--adultery. *From the records of 51 Michael (8) Latta; All we know about William is that he moved to Freedom in 1816, and left sometime between 1870 and 1900. He had an unsavory reputation, he left town with a woman that the laws of the state would not let him marry. He left the country with this mystery woman. Children with Barbara Mewhinney:
