Early History Of Greene County, Indiana, by Jack Baber, 1875, says, "...old John Latta...has the credit and honor of being the first white man to build a log cabin in Greene County in the year 1817." In 1817, John was not "old". [ed. I SUSPECT this may be John's father, Joseph. But no proof. (County records destroyed.)]

History of Greene and Sullivan Counties (IN), 1884, published by Godspeed Publishers, p273:

"It is said that the first settler in this township was old John Latta, who built his log cabin on Latta's Creek, near whewre the old canal crosses the same, early in the year 1817. He was the first settler in that vicinity, and the creek upon which he located took its name from him. He was a noted hunter and trapper, and spent much of his time in quest of game, the hides and carcasses netting him more than he could make any other way. " [ed. I SUSPECT this was Joseph, not John Latta. John was just upriver from here in Owen County.] Latta's Creek currently drains what was a swampland in Greene Co just west of the present day town of Bloomfield flowing southeasterly and emptying into the West Fork of the White River near Bloomfield.

"It cannot be determined with any degree of accuracy which of the persons named was the first bona fide settler, as none of them moved onto their respective purchases until about ten years after their purchases were made [sic]. Mr. Hugh M. Light, the oldest living settler in the township at the present time, is of the opinion that John and William Latta became the first permanent residents, as they had good improvements on their claims as early as the summer of 1818. The land which John Latta entered, and on which he lived until about the year 1829 [sic], is situated in the northeastern part of the township, and is owned at the present time by Isaac Barnes. The Latta's were men eminently qualified for pioneers, belonging to that hardy class developed by the times, and found on the frontier of all settled countries. "John appears to have been a man of honor, and was well respected in the community which he founded; but the reputation of William was rather unsavory, and in later years he created quite a sensation by leaving the country acompanied with a woman whom the laws of the State gave him no right to live with -- in other words, he took her "for better or worse" without the formalities of a wedding ceremony."

This transaction states that this was land originally bought in partnership of the two parties but recorded in original Vincennes Land Office under John Latta's name.

Notes for Tressa ("Tressie") LATTA

Tressie needed to borrow $200 from her father-in-law, A. C. Modesitt, to pay the expenses for Clarence's burial. She signed a note pledging to repay the sum and diligently recorded the repayments until completely paid.

(Note seen by Ken Erdle in Tressie's effects, but subsequently disappeared.)

Tressie took in washing and ironing for neighbors to earn money to support her family washing the clothes on a scrub board and ironing with a flat iron heated on a coal stove or wood fired kitchen stove in the summer. Tressie told a story of one night, as a widow with five small children, hearing a commotion outside her house in Seelyville. Upon opening the door she saw several members of the Ku Klux Klan with their robes, hoods and flaming torches. However, instead of causing trouble, they had brought a wheelbarrel of groceries to Tressie and her family. She asked, "Who are you?", but they would not identify themselves. Instead they just dispersed into the night. On one occasion, responding to reports of Tressie's difficulty in taking care of her family, county officials sent a bus to her home to remove her 5 children to the Glenn orphanage. Her desperate pleas to them that, after losing her husband, her children was all she had left in her life won a reprieve and the family remained together in spite of difficult times. Tressie would never remarry, indeed, living only for her children. Upon her death in 1967 Tressie's house was pretty much as one would expect to find a house in the area in 1921, the year of the death of her husband, Clarence. The house had 5 rooms but one was almost never used, perhaps because family members had been "laid out" in that room prior to burial in the past. Heat was provided by 2 Warm Morning coal stoves, one in the kitchen and a larger, fancy one with a polished steel skirt in the living room. The house did not have indoor plumbing and a well in the backyard was used for water. No telephone, television nor even a radio. Two improvements to the home from that era were a refrigerator replacing the "icebox" and, in later years, the wood cook stove was replaced with an electric stove.

Worked odd jobs as carpenter, etc. Built a house they lived in for a short while on Blaine Ave. just north of US40 on east side of Terre Haute. Then the family moved to Seelyville in late 1910's. Later worked at "Car Barns" of TH Railway where he developed a rupture lifting the steel rail wheels. Not having enough money to see a doctor, gangrene set in which eventually caused his death.
