James (1). Alexander was b. abt. 1840; m. Mary Colbert, daughter of Zeely (also seen as Zelia, Giley, or Brazelia) and Jane Colbert on July 7, 1861 (Gilmer Co., Georgia Marriages, Book 4, page 317) by J. W. Chastain, JP. . Lived about 6 miles from Newport, Georgia. Alexander was a member of the 39th Regiment, Company G, of the Gilmer Volunteer Infantry, known as the "Gilmer Lions" along with his brother William J. Latta. They joined on the same date, March 4, 1862, along with a John C. Colbert, William Colbert and a Joseph Jackson Newberry, who all enlisted the same day. James (1). b. __________; d. 1873; William married Olivet (Ollie or Olive) Thompson, daughter of Ishamand Elizabeth Thompson and Elizabeth Thompson on Sept. 24, 1854 by Chesley D. Prince, JP (Gilmer Co. Marr., Book 2, page 63). William was also a member of the 39th Regiment, Company G, of the Gilmer Volunteer Infantry, known as the "Gilmer Lions" along with his brother Alexander. They joined on the same date, March 4, 1862. The roster for Company G lists that they also went by "Latty." There was also a Joseph Jackson Newberry who enlisted the same day. The roster shows that Joseph Jackson Newberry was a private, and that his name was cancelled on the original roll. His pension records show that he enlisted in Company, Ralston's Battalion Georgia Militia Calvary in 1864, and was at home, sick, at the close of the war. He was born in Georgia in 1837. (Would this have been a cousin to William and Alexander?) SLC 1730424 Georgia Salt Books has heads of families who supplied salt in the civil war. Listed in Gilmer County (pg. 162-3) is Mrs. Olive Latty.

7 MARYANN (3) b._________; d. 1913; m. E. D. (Edward) Newberry on May 18, 1873 in Gilmer Co., Georgia by Jonathan M. Davis, Mg. (Gilmer Co. Marriages, Book 2, page 345); moved to Arkansas. Maryann is buried in Alex, Arkansas outside the town of Altus, Franklin County, Arkansas. Mary Ann and Edward divorced in Arkansas. Edward is buried in Hartman, Arkansas. Children: George, Janie, John, Samantha, and Zemner. Mary Ann was living with her son, George Newberry at the time of her death.

9 JOHN M. (3) b. 1870; m. Mary Harper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey Harper. Mrs. Harper was a sister of Rev. N. L. Osborn. John's children were: Alice (m. H. S. (Herschel) Charles on Sept. 10, 1911 by C. W. Bramlett, J. P. Gilmer Co. Marriages, Book 5, page 113); Bright, who became the wife of Lawrence Kincaid; Inez who married Andy Pence; Myrtle, who married Robert Hold and lived in Ohio; Opal, who married Ed Starks, ; Eunice, who married Walter Starks, and Claude, who lived in Mountaintown District.

James (1) Alexander (2) Born on April 19, 1862; d. Oct. 1, 1928 at the age of 66 in Militia Dist. 844 (Noontootla), Georgia. Lived and died 6 miles from Newport, Fannin Co., Georgia. His father died when William was six weeks old, and he was raised by his grandfather, Zeely (Zelia, Giley, and Brazelia) Colbert. William married Sarah Beaver on Feb. 6, 1887 in Fannin Co., GA (Fannin Co. GA Genweb site) "Lotta, William A. to Sarah Beaver by David J. Stover, Mg, Book 412) She was born April 16, 1861 in Union County, Georgia. No children.
