Mail List |
What
is a mail list?
In short, it's an automated e-mailing system. As a subscriber, you send an e-mail message to LATTA-L@rootsweb.com and the server relays your message to all the subscribers to the list. You, in turn, receive copies of all messages posted by other subscribers, as well as copies of the messages you yourself send. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of mail lists in operation, and they have proven to be an effective means for genealogists (as well as other, of course) to communicate with their fellow researchers and to share information. There are two versions of the LATTA-L mail list: the standard version and the "digest" version. With the standard version, messages are relayed to you as they are received by the server. If you want to minimize the number of messages you receive, the "digest version" accumulates several messages (the number depends on the volume of mail) and sends them to you as one long message separated into the individual messages. How do I subscribe? To subscribe to the standard version, send an e-mail message consisting of the single word subscribe to this address: LATTA-L-request@rootsweb.com Be sure to turn off or remove any signature that you normally use. Your message must contain only the word subscribe. To subscribe to the digest version, send an e-mail message consisting of the single word subscribe to this address: LATTA-D-request@rootsweb.com Be sure to turn off or remove any signature that you normally use. Your message must contain only the word subscribe. That's all there is to it. You'll receive an automated welcome letter containing instructions for unsubscribing (not that you would ever want to, of course). How do I send messages? When you want to post a message to the list, simply address it to: LATTA-L@rootsweb.com The address for posting messages is the same whether you subscribe to the standard version or the digest version. |
