LATTA, BULLOCK Does anyone know which branch this Thomas Latta was in?

Stockton Daily Argus, Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA 26-31 Oct. 1857

Saturday, 31 Oct. 1857 - CONVICTED -- Ezekiel Bullock has been convicted of murder in the 2nd degree, for the killing of Thomas Latta, in Sacramento, on the 9th of June last.  The 'Bee' says that during the entire trial of Bullock, his wife has been by his side watching with great anxiety each phase of the case, often turning upon him a pair of sorrowful eyes and a pale, care-worn countenance.  As he was leaving the court room on the day of his conviction, she forgot, for a moment, everything else but her affection for the once happy husband of her heart, and falling upon his neck sobbed in the most heart-breaking manner, until forcibly removed.  During the night session, bullock held in his arms a little burly-headed child about 4 years old.

LATTA I just received the newsletter (issue 33, Fall 2007) and saw my information on page 26 query #8.  In the next newsletter under additions could you please put Latta Brfanch 23 #38 Jessie Latta b. March 30, 1879.  Sorry I didn't make it clear in the email.  Thanks. Nancy Lata, RLatta6374@aol.com
LATTA, EARWOOD I just had to write when I found the Latta Genealogy Newsletter website.  My mother was Gwendolyn Loraine Latta (not listed in your files) and was the granddaughter of Oscar Latta, Texas Ranger, Company C. (photo attached is from http://libraries.ou.edu/etc/westhist/Rose/ranger5.html) My mom always spoke with admiration about her Latta heritage, and had stories of her father's wild family.  She was born in Del Rio, Texas to Frank and Lorena Latta.  My mom's mother was young, and her husband and his family had "Wild West" values -- lots of drinking, fighting and shooting.  My grandmother took my mom and went back home to her mom, divorcing Frank Latta.  The website has Oscar Latta married to Mamie Earwood as Branch 1, which is why I am writing to you.  I've never done any genealogy research, so I am not going to be any help to you, iunfortunately.  My mom has passed away.  Her father was Frank, and the only other child (that I know of) was from his Indian wife Beulah, a girl named Nancy, who would have been born aroung 1954 -- and married Paul Hand and lived in San Antonio.  My mom spent a few weeks in the summer during her childhood visiting her father, but didn't visit as an adult until she got word that he was dying, so we all went to visit a couple of times -- he was a dear man -- I wish I could have known my grandfather longer -- he had apparently settled down quite a bit! Frank was the son of Oscar, I believe, and he had a brother named Lawrence.  I met one cousin of my mom's, Lawrence's son, Ross Latta, who was married to Joan.  I also met their son Steve, and could probably find him again if needed.  He had at least 2 siblings, but I n ever met them.  My mom would have absolutely loved this website.  I don't know why I never thought about researching (by that I mean Googling!) the Latta name with her while she was alive.  She died in 2005, and was so proud of her Latta family.

Frank A. Hamer and Oscar Latta, Company C, Taxes Rangers, 1908.

It was just great to see this website, and if you have any questions or more information, I would live to hear from you.  I am pretty sure my mom was born as Gwendolyn Lorraine Latta on Jan. 1, 1931 in Del Rio, Texas.  (A new year's baby -- the doc was called from a party to deliver her, and wore his tux during the delivery, or so goes the story.)  Here is some info from the Val Verde (borders Erath County) County Cemetery I found the other night. I believe "Lizzie" is Pernetta Latta, my great-great grandmother (apparently never married though!), Oscar was her son, my great-grandfather, and a Texas Ranger; Lawrence is my great-uncle, I've heard the name "Lofton" and believe he's a brother to Lawrence and Frank.  Lawrence had children, but the only one I knew was Ross, who had children, and the only one of those I know is Steve.  Frank had my mom, Gwendolyn Lorraine Latta, and a daughter, Nancy.  Frank Latta, my grandfather isn't listed here, but he was born July 26, 1903, and died in July 1971.  He married my grandmother, Lorena Martha Roberson, in San Antonio, in November of 1929, they divorced in 1933.  From the cemetery info:

Latta, Lawrence - b. Sept. 17, 1900, Jan. 17, 1965

Latta, Lizzie, 1847-1933, mother of Oscar Latta

Latta, Lofton H., March 19, 1913 - Nov. 29, 1963, Texas TEC5 CO C 7 Engineer BN World War II

Latta, May - May 1, 1878 - Apr. 17, 1963

Latta, Oscar - Sept. 14, 1868 - Aug. 1, 1954 - He Hath Done What He Could

Latta, Paul - Sept. 17, 1910 - Dec. 31, 1928

Thanks fo rthe note back; I have an uncle who does genealogy -- my mother's half brother, so not a Latta.  I'll copy him on this note to see if he wants to add anything.

LATTA, JOHNSON, WILLIAMS I glanced at page 22 when I first received the most recent newsletter, Fall 2007.  But tonight I had a chance to look at it in some detail. The Fayette County, KY LATTAS are Branch 22, related most closely to Kim Latta of Burlington, Iowa.  These Lattas descend from Harvey McDowell Latta, married Fannie Johnson 29 Apr 1845, Woodford County, KY. Harvey was the son of Matthew Latta and Polly Williams.  This latter couple also were parents to my ancestor, William W. Latta and Mary S. Williams, his wife.  The Robert Latta identified in the 1900 Census was a son of Harvey McDowell Latta and Fannie Johnson.  Harvey had a second marriage, but no children from that marriage so far as I can tell.  Kim Latta gave me enought into to tie in these later Lattas with what I have found in my own research.  Cathi Vannice and I hope to do some more research on Branch 22.  What we need to do is read the order books in Woodford County KY to see what more information they contain on Lattas living in that area in the late 1700s and early 1800s. LATTA, MUSILOVA Hi.  Just wondering who this family might 'belong to'. A friend of mine recently sent an email to a bunch of her friends - one of her friends noticed my last name "Latta."  This friend of my friend recently wrote me.  Her name is Ivana Musilova - she currently lives in Bratislava, Slovakia, but did live here in Ontario, Canada from 1968-1973 before returning to Slovakia.  Her mother's maiden name was Latta.  Ivann's Mom is Jolana; her father's name was Juraj Latta and he had a brother called Ladislav Latta.  Ladislav has a son, Igor who currently lives in Toronto.  He is Ivana's mother's cousin.  The family came from Pichne, a small village near the Ukrainian border, about 7 km from the town of Snina. She couldn't getmuch information from her Mom, but all she knew was that Juraj Latta's mother died when he was about 3 years old and his father remarried and had another daughter.  Ivana's grandfather was born in 1922, and he died 9 or 10 years ago.  Ivan'as grandmother still lives in Pichne and she will be 84 this year.  She did say that the next time she visits her grandmother in Pichne, she will try to find out more or she will go to the city hall and try to find more of the family history. Thanks so much. Jody Latta-Poljanski, Branch #13, jpolanski@sympatico.ca
LATTA, GRIEVE  I am looking for any information on my grandfather, John Latta, who came from Belfast, Ireland to Canada sometime around 1918 or so (not sure on this).  He met my grandmother, Mary Grieve, on the ship over, and they settled in Edmonton, Alberta and had five daughters.  John Latta was the oldest of several siblings, but the only one that I know of by name is James. Thank you for your help. Rebecca Sykes Johnston, and my address is 5789 Kerry Lane, Nanaimo, B.C. Canada. email: djohnston2@shaw.ca
LATTA, GRIEVE Hello Rebecca: It is so amazing to hear from another Latta Family whose ancestor was a contemporary of my Great Grandfathers.  Besides my family line which is listed in Branch 16, there were also other Latta Families from Branch 13 that were here in  Edmonton between 1898 to 1950s.  Some have moved on to other areas but my family still resides here.  At present there are Irish, Scot and Eastern European Lattas in Edomonton. Would you count as one of your family members "Polly Latta?  There are several Johns and Josephs that my Dad could not connect to any Branch.  Some even ran hotels and then they seemed to have disappeared.  Dad spent hours looking for more information bout the other Lattas that cropped up in the early phone and Henderson Directories. Without much success. Are any of your family buried her?  There are several Gravestone that I think belong to your family at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.  I could take digital images and email to you if you like?  Do you still have family in this area?  If your ancestors came from Ireland, my Dad was of the opinion that the Irish Branches were all related.  We currently have a DNA study involving the Y chromosome male descendancy) One Surname Project underway and I am writing the first report fight now and hope to have it ready for the May issue of the "Latta Genealogy Newsletter".  No doubt as we speak Ken, the Editor whom you contacted, will have entered your query to the newsletter. Will have to look some things up but I will get back to you about anything that I can come up with.  Sincerely, Kathy Latta, Branch 16, Edmonton, Alta., lattakj@telusplanet.net
