Alexander Meldrum Lattie ** chr 15 May 1808, St. Andrews & Leonard ** and/or: b 10 May 1802 St. Andrews Fife. ** or b 1806 - 2 Nov, chr 9 Nov, Dairsie Fife d. 4 Sep 1849 - Drowned Columbia River, Clatsop County, Oregon. Parents: John Lattie and Helen Clark who married: 1806 - 26 Nov, Dairsie. m. Marie Catherine (Elizabeth) Sikkas. The DOB 10 May 1802 St. Andrews Fife - is from another researcher Dick Coffman, whose 2 pages seem now not to be working: http://www.cnnw.net/~pontiac/lattie.html. But there is another: http://www.e-familytree.net/F249/F249152.htm I believe the correct year of birth is probably 1808, not 1802, not in the least seeing his parents married 1806, but also, the DOB of 10 May 1808 would fit nicely with a Christening a few days later on the 15th. Further, it is entirely possible his parents had two sons same name, the first born 1806 having died young - common practice to give the next child of same gender the same name. His mother poss. born abt 1786, and died: 1858 in Fife, age 76 (SP Search) Helen Latto (other name Clark). His father, have nothing more. Issue of John Lattie/Latto & Helen Clark: Alexander b 1806 - 2 Nov, chr 9 Nov, Dairsie Fife; James Lattie 1810 Elie Fife, Agnes Latto 1812 Elie; Helen Latto 1813 Elie; Thomas Latto 1817 Elie, John Latto chr abt 1818 Elie **; Jess Latto 1821 Elie; Jane Latto 1821 Elie; Alexander Latto chr 15 May 1808 Elie. I am not related to this family, but have an Australian contact who descends from John chr about 1818 - do you have/need details? This researcher says the father, John Lattie/Latto was a tanner in 1820. I think this could be the mother, Helen in 1841: C41: Helen probably in Elie, Fife; Toll Wynd East Side, Helen Latta age 50, born Fife, Occ: Independent. With an Elizabeth Thompson, age 20, born Fife. (no Occ listed). Having collected a lot of data on Scots Latto/Latta, I think there may be a good chance Alexander Meldrum Lattie/Latta's father John Latta is from this family: Alexqander Lata and Alison Meldrum - no marriage found, have issue christened in North Leith, Endinburgh, Midlothian: Alison Lata, 1783; David Latta, chr 1785; Alexander Lata, chr 1787; James Lata, chr 1792; William Lata, chr 1798; Thomas Lata, chr 1796; John Lata, chr 1789. |

| LATTO/LATTA MITCHELL/ LOTA/ LATTOW |
This is what data I have collected on these Latto/Latta's: Elizabeth Lata m. William Mitchell 12 Dec 1763 Dalgety Fife other date as Elizabeth Lota 12 Dec 1767, Dalgety Fife (IGI). One of the dates years may be a mis-transcript by the IGI. Have often see Elizabeth and Euphan/ Euphem(ia) interchanged in earlier records. Children: Mitchell, father George Mitchell (Mitchel); - George b 15 May 1769, Chr Abedour Fife MMS: Euphans Laty; Margaret b 1 Aug 1771, Chr Abedour Fife MMS: Euphans Laty; Isabel chr 12 Dec 1773, Dunfermline, MMS: Euphens Lata; Euphens chr 7 Apr 1776 Dunfermline, MMS: Euphens Lata; Janet chr 16 Apr 1780 Dunfermline, MMS: Euphan Latto; Jean chr 9 Jun 1782 Dunfermline, MMS: Euphan Latto; Ann chr 20 Jun 1784 Dunfermline, MMS: Euphan Latto, Betty chr 1 Mar 1778 Dunfermline, MMS: Euphan Lattow. I assume you refer to your Euphemia's birth on IGI 1838 as Euphan Lata naming her father Thomas, but no mother name. I believe the following are probably her siblings - all chr on IGI in Logie with a father named Thomas and no named mother. 1) Andrew Lata Chr 1732 - 27 Aug, Logie; 2) Jean Lata - Chr 1734 - 7 Aug, Logie; 3) James Lata - Chr 1736 - 22 Aug, Logie; 1) Andrew Lata is very possibly the same Andrew Lata who married 9 Jun 1764 Logie to a Mary Arthur. And in turn I think they are likely the parents of: Helen Lata chr 1765 - 3 Nov, Logie with father names as Andrew but no named mother. As time went on, the Lat(t)a name in Fife was nearly always recorded and became known as Latto. I'm not related as far as I am aware to these Latto's - though I am to other Fife Latto lines. |

| VIRGIL LATTA |
Hello - I was looking over the Latta website and was interested in finding out about my family's past. My grandfather was Virgil Latta, born in the early 1900's, I believe in Fort Smith, AR. He was one of four sons: Ursul, Flavil and Guy (yes, those are the real names!). He moved to Boulder, CO where he worked for the post office and owned a grocery store and a hotel at one time. I do not really know anything about his parents, grandparents, but I thought I would be interesting to try to find out more. |

| LATTA/ CHANDLER |
How do I correct some information given on Latta Branch 9? On the wife of Thomas Neely Latta #5 generation 4, it says that she was born in Vineyard, Washington Co., AR. This is incorrect. They have the date correct, but she was born in Illinois. Jacob Chandler did not come to Arkansas until about 1819 and went first to Clark Co., AR. From there he went briefly to Miller Co. AR which at that time extended into what is now SE Oklahoma. In 1825 the white residents of that area were required to move as the land had been ceded to the Choctaw Indians. Chandler returned briefly to Clark Co. AR, but was in Washington Co. by the 1829 Sheriff's census. In Illinois, they lived in Grand Tower which was at that time part of Randolph Co., but is now Jackson Co., IL. Emily Chandler Latta was the sister of my g-grandfather Preston Chandler. I have a copy of the Chandler Bible with the birth dates in it. The 1850 census of Fannin Co. is the only census in which the correct birth place is given for Emily Chandler Latta. Her sister Unity (Eunetta on your web page - Unity in the family Bible) was born in Washington Co. AR, not Fannin Co., TX. She never lived in Texas. She and John Leander Latta were married in Washington Co. 20 Oct 1853 and she died 3 years later 21 Nov 1856 in Washington County, AR (dates from Family Bible). |

| Latta/ latta/ Brahmin Cast of India |
Actually as I wrote in my earlier E-Mail, Here in India, the surname Latta belongs to Brahman Caste in India. As you may be know that Indian race [The Hindus] is divided in so many Castes and then sub-castes. Traditionally it is believed in India that Brahman Caste [including Latta surname and so many other surnames] is a intellectual class who hold command on Education, Art, Culture, making rules for the society, placing best examples of humanity, dedication, love & affection, high thinking and simple living, always thinking for good of the society etc. I don't claim that all the Brahman in India has retained their above values. I think We are the original Indians belongs to northern part of India. I can send you the names of our head of the family since seven Generations. I am sending herewith my postal address as follow, you can send your newsletter or other material on Latta families. Please send your address also so I shall try to send you some book on Brahman Caste of India. |

| Latta/ Ronald |
I would like to find more information on the Lattas prior to John Latta, married to Margaret (nee Ronald) 11/6/1773 in Dreghorn, Ayershire (sic), Scotland. One of hs sons was Robert, born in Kilmarnock 31/6/1787 and that is where my line of the family comes from. However, before that I have difficulty in tracing previous relations. Any help would be appreciated. |
Thank you. Philip Latta, P.O. Box 32, Noosa Heads, QLD 4567 Australia. |
