LATTA/ BEVERIDGE |
My name is Penny
Boyce from
Melbourne,
Australia. I am
trying to make the
connection of my
family LATTA to
yours. The details
I have and
unsuccessfully
tried to make a
connection to your
website are as
follows:
My great great
great great
grandmother is
Helen LATTA b
8/6/1797 m David
BEVERIDGE. Her
father was Colin
LATTA m. Mary
MUIR, Branch No.
7, I think. My big
quest was finding
out why my maternal
g grandfather was
named Colin LATTA
BEVERIDGE. During
my limited
research I have
came to the
conclusion you are
given these
strange names
because they
actually belong to
someone else in
the family. So I
left the BEVERIDGE
side and started
searching the name
LATTA. The
following is my
discovery. Colin
Latta BEVERIDGE b.
15/11/1878, son of
John BEVERIDGE b.
1853, m. Faithy
ELLIOT b 1856,
John, son of Colin
BEVERIDGE b
3/29/1818 m
Harriet BRIGGS b.
20/8/1816; Colin,
son of David
BEVERIDGE b
3/11/1798 m Helen
LATTA b 8/6/1797;
Helen, daughter of
Colin LATTA (LATA,
LATTOW, LARLOW) b
20/1/1771? m. Mary
Muir; Colin, son
of John LATA b
23/3/1746 m Helen
BEVERIDGE b
16/12/1741; John,
son of Colin LATO
(once again
several different
spellings for both
first and surname)
m Maragret
BEVERIDGE b
3/1/1718; Colin,
son of Collen LATO
m Jean BAILYIE?
The BEVERIDGES and
the LATTAs seem to
be intertwined
with each other
throughout the
early times and
with time and
effort one could
put them in their
rightful places.
But it does make
for long nights
sorting out who
belongs to who,
especially when
they all have such
common names. If I
can help you or
you can help, I
would love to hear
from you. Regards, |
Penny,

LATTA/ BRINTNELL |
I would like to
contact a
descendant of
Leigh BRINTNELL.
His full name was
Wilfred Leigh
BRINTNELL but he
was always known
as Leigh. Leigh
was born in 1895
near Latta's Mill,
Ontario, a few
miles north of
Belleville, and
died in 1971 at
Edmonton, Alberta.
My father, "Jack"
Ward LATTA, was a
cousin and he and
Leigh grew up
together in the
Latta's Mill area.
The LATTAs and
BRINTNELLs have a
long history - they
intermarried
during several
generations in the
1800s. My father
served in the
Canadian army
during WWI and
Leigh was a pilot
with the Royal
Flying Corps.
After the war,
they both ended up
living in
Edmonton. Leigh
became a legendary
"bush" pilot
during the 1920's
and 30's and
created Mackenzie
Air Services which
eventually became
a major airline -
Canadian Pacific
Airlines. He was
posthumously
awarded the Order
of the British
Empire for his
career in opening
up the Canadian
north. Leigh
was the first
person to fly into
the barren
region of Great
Bear Lake. In 1928
he flew a mining
prospector,
Gilbert LABINE,
into Great Bear
Lake and they
discovered massive
pitchblende
deposits, the
source of uranium.
There was a market
for uranium at the
time for the
radiation
treatment of
cancer. LABINE
developed a mine
on the shores of
the lake and by
1935 began
shipping
concentrated
uranium by air.
The attached photo
was taken in 1935.
It shows Leigh
standing beside
his aircraft next
to the first
shipment of
uranium from the
LABINE mine on a
cold northern day.
In a few years,
uranium would have
a less humane use
than treating
caner. In the
early years of
WWII, the US
government created
the Manhattan
Project based in
Los Alamos, NM to
develop an atomic
bomb. The only
source of large
quantities of
uranium at that
time was Labine's
mine. The Canadian
government
expropriated the
mine and its
production was
greatly increased
under a crown
corporation called
Eldorado Mining
and Refining. The
Canadian
government
supplied the
Manhattan Project
with the uranium
required to
develop the atomic
bomb that
destroyed
Hiroshima. Only 17
years had passed
since the day
Leigh and LABINE
stood on the
frozen shores of
Great Bear Lake
examining a rock
with a greenish
color that they
thought might be
pitchblende. |

LATTA, BRANCH 13 |
Thanks to Gary, I
learned that John
Chester LATTA,
Branch 13, was my
gg grandfather. I
have found John
Chester LATTA, age
80 in the 1920
census in Beowawe,
Eureka, Nevada,
also in census
from 1870 in
Nevada, but
born/married/
fathered in
Ontario, Canada
before that date.
Just wonder if
anyone has come
across any details
of his
death/burial? I am
attempting to
piece together the
details of his
life in Ontario,
Canada to Nevada. |

her 40's and

I think the

LATTA, ROTHSTEIN |
I
recently found a
magnificent Farm
Security
Administration
photograph of a
Walter LATTA, a
hunting and
fishing guide of
Bozeman, Montana,
taken by Arthur
ROTHSTEIN in 1939.
You can find this
to the Library of
Congress Web site,
http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/mdbquery.html
and paging down to
the yellow
"Searching
Numbers" box at
the bottom. Past
in the search
number
LC-USF34-027198-D.
This will take you
to a page
featuring a
thumbnail of the
photograph "Walter
Latta guides
fishing and
hunting parties,
Bozeman, Montana,"
and if you click
the line "Display
Images with
Neighboring Call
Numbers" you will
find a dozen other
photos of him. A
much better
version of the
photo, but with
Mr. LATTA
unidentified, is
at the Wesleyan
University site,
http://www.wesleyan.edu.
I have purchased a
print of this
photograph from
the Library of
Congress to hand
on my office wall
and would
appreciate any
information from LATTA family
members about
Walter LATTA's
life. It is such a
powerful portrait
that I would be
grateful to know
more about him.
With best wishes, |

LATTA/ HOOK/
FISHBACH - Branch
4 |
Reading through
the LATTA
genealogy site
today -- I should
be studying, but
I'm so intrigued
with this site; it
has been years
since I last
contacted the
LATTA genealogy
org -- I found an
excerpt of a
newsletter article
in which mention,
from Eileen HOOK,
regarding the name
LATTA being a
truncated form of
an even longer
name, and this
happened in
France. My
grandfather, James
Donald LATTA, told
me similar
details. Also, I
would like to
update my
grandfather's
information. Here
is his immediate
family's detail as
copied from the
genealogy site:
229 HARRY (6) LATTA
Willis (5) Walter (4) John (3) James (2) James (1). b. October 11, 1891 in NY; d.
______; m. Hazel Helen Fishbach of England. Hazel's line can be traced back to
English Royalty. Children:268 GENE IRENE (7) Living in 1996;
269 JAMES DONALD (7) Born: April 26, 1915. Living in 1996.
Married Naomi I. _____. She was born August 17, 1916 in West Lorne, Ontario,
Canada. She died Dec. 18, 1994 in Lockport, NY, USA. Funeral service was held
Dec. 21, 1994 at 11A at Lange Funeral Home. She was buried in the North Ridge
Cemetery. James and Naomi had 4 sons: Donald, Douglas Richard, Dennis and David;
270 MARGARET HELEN (7);
271 LOMA (7);
272 MORRIS GERALD (7) Hit by an Automobile and died at age
10.
James Donald was
married to Naomi,
middle initial
"I". I cannot
recall her maiden
name. However, as
I am now looking
at her funeral
notice as I write
you, I will give
you her birth and
death information:
In Loving Memory
of: Naomi I. LATTA
Date of Birth:
August 17, 1916 in
West Lorne,
Ontario, Canada;
Date of Death: Dec
18, 1994 in
Lockport, NY, USA;
Funeral Service:
Dec. 21, 1994 at
11A at Lange
Funeral Home,
Inc.; Officiating:
Rev. Kenneth
WEAVER and Rev.
Frank BONGIOVANNI.
Interment: North
Ridge Cemetery.
Now, at North
Ridge Cemetery,
there are other
LATTA family
relatives buried
there. I remember
this from my
previous trips.
James Donald LATTA,
who passed away a
couple years ago,
I believe is
buried there as
well. James'
sister Gene was
the eldest of the
children. I met
her during my
grandmother's
funeral in 1994.
She came down from
Canada for the
funeral, and my
grandfather was
born in Canada, so
there should be
more info about
the LATTA name in
Canadian records.
Could you please
update my family's
information in the
genealogy database
with the above
info with James
Donald married to
Naomi I., and also
include her dates
and places of
birth and death?
Also, James and
Naomi were
survived by four
sons in order of
first born to last
born: Donald,
Douglas Richard
(my Dad), Dennis
and David. All
brother are still
alive. Thank you
very much for your
time, and take
good care!
