LATTIE/ CE'CUST/ SEKKUS/ CLARK I am always searching for Alexander Meldrum LATTIE, born 10 May 1802, St. Andrews, County Fife, Scotland. He was with the Hudson Bay Company before drowning in the Columbia River (Oregon), September 4, 1849. Was the first white bar pilot on the Columbia (Native Americans taught him). He was my great great grandfather. He married one of the local Natives, CE'CUST/SEKKUS, later baptized Marie Catherine (Elizabeth) LATTIE. They had seven children. His parents were: John and Mary/Helene (CLARK) LATTIE. He had a brother, James LATTIE. I don't have his birth information. I really don't know anymore about him other than from his journal. He must have been a well educated man. Would you have any suggestions for me? Would you know how you obtain information from old Hudson Bay Records? Is this name familiar to you? Sorry for so many questions but any advice you can send me will be greatly appreciated. Joan Luper, joanieblake@yahoo.com

He married in 1836(?) a Jane ELLIOT in Morgan County, OH and eventually moved to MN where he was buried in 1900 in Elk River, MN. They had 6 chldren: James, William, Hugh Johnson, Nancy Jane, Abbe Anne, and Mary Elizabeth LATTA, who married Albert G. White. We do not know Barton's parents were. LATTA/ INDIA I am the son of William Duff LATTA who was born in Calcutta, India in the 1930x. He was the son of Alistair LATTA, who was the son of Henry LATTA of Edinburgh (who was an employee of the Royal Bank of Scotland). Which branch do we belong to? My brother is Stephen William LATTA who lives in Cape Town. My uncle is James LATTA. My cousins are Michael and Denise LATTA. My great grandfather, Henry, worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland in Edinburgh. My grandfather Alistair worked as an expat in India. My Dad, William, was born there in the 1930s. The family moved to  South Africa in 1940s and still live in Johannesburg. Peter Lawrence LATTA, pLatta@Telkomsa.net
LATTA/ TODD I have been looking for a William LATTA who disappeared in my branch, and came across a William LATTA of Bath and Copley, OH, who was a counterfeiter. He moved on to  Burr Oak, Michigan. There was a mention of him in one of the newsletters, but not much more information. I have found some interesting reading on the internet. Does anyone else have any information on him? I believe he may be Moses LATTA, aka William Moses LATTA of Branch 46. Linda WRIGHT of Willow Creek, CA stated that Moses was aka William LATTA in a query to the newsletter. I have e-mailed her and asked her where she got her information that he was aka William, but have not gotten a response. Does anyone else know? Moses LATTA of Branch 46 married Rachel TODD and fought in the Rev. War. The story about his being impressed into the war by the British, escapting and joining George Washington and crossing the Delaware with him is the exact sotry that was supposed to happen to our John (1) LATTA of Branch 17, that I am wondering if he is John's son, William LATTA, who disappeared from Huntingdon County, PA in 1817. LATTA - Copley, OH I have been surfing the net and came across the following information in the history of Copley, OH. The busy commercial activities in Montrose are not really all that new. Also called Ellis Corners or Latta's Corners, Montrose has a long history of
business. When it was Latta's Corners, tavern keeper William Latta actually was chiefly interested in counterfeiting and his hotel became a hangout for the gang of dandies he was in cahoots with.
1825 - In the 1820's with the commerce developing from the opening of the Ohio canal, a man by the name of James BROWN formed a counterfeiting ring, "the blacklegs," in the Akron, Ohio area. Historian Samuel A. LANE, sheriff of Akron, Ohio and editor of THE BUZZARD wrote under the pen name of "Jedediah Brownhead, Esq.," in 1825, about James BROWN and his followers. "---For your own protection, you should note the stature of the men who have taken up storekeeping in the little neighboring town of Boston. They are William G. TAYLOR of Cleveland; Abraham S. HOLMES, Col. William ASHLEY of Boston; William LATTA of Bath;
Jonathan DECOURCEY and Thomas JOHNSON of Norton; Joshua KING and Joe KEELER of Portage. --- These men are counterfeiters; and on a vast and damaging scale."  Does anyone know which branch this William is? I am assuming they are probably the same man. I would be very interested to know.

LATTA/ FRANCK I was looking through one of my several books on WW II, "Winter Journey Through The Nineth", written by Major Harry A. Franck. In the Preface it
mentions that Harry A. Franck's wife was Rachel Latta Franck, who died in 1986. The "Latta" immediately got my attention and I checked the indexes to the RHL data. There is no spouse by the name of Franck, but there is a Rachel Whitehall Latta, branch #8, family # 14, born in 1892, that looks like a highly probable match. (Major Harry A. Franck was 60+ years of age when WW II started and talked his way on to active duty; he had served in WW I.) Can anyone verify that Rachel Whitehall Latta is Rachel Latta Franck?
Tom Kintigh, Branch 3, Tucson, AZ, tqkintigh@worldnet.att.net
LATTA/ WHITEHILL/ FRANCK Yes, indeed. I can verify that Rachel WHITEHILL LATTA was married to Harry A. FRANCK. She was Branch 8, and was my Aunt, my mother's sister. She and Harry had 5 children of whom four are living. She was an author in her own right. Her book "I married a Vagabond" was published in 1939. I recently purchased a copy on Amazon.com Cynthia Elliott, Rountree@aol.com
LATTA - CHICAGO BEARS I ran across this "trading card" of Greg LATTA who played professional football for the Chicago Bears. Some time ago, I exchanged emails with a LATTA in Chicago who knew Greg and indicated he was from North Carolina. Apparently his ancestors were "employed" on the LATTA Plantation, near Charlotte. The LATTA Plantation was established by James LATTA (Branch 12) in the early 1800s. The old plantation property is now an historic site and State park. After the Emancipation Proclamation in the 1860's, many former "employees" on the cotton plantations adopted the surname of their "employer." Keith Latta, Branch 13, klatta@shaw.ca
LATTA I am interested in the LATTA genealogy. A great grandfather of mine was Barton A. LATTA (Branch 48). I have a lot of names and dates relating to Barton and his ancestors. If you are interested in this information please get back to me. Thank you. Sandra Flynn, slflynn@ezaccess.net

LATTA/ SCHULZE/ HAMILTON All I know is this: Gustav Adolf SCHULZE married Bertha HAMILTON in 1911 or thereabouts, and they had a son in 1914. They named him Lester Wilhelm, or Lester William - I'm not sure which. About two years later they divorced. About ten years after the divorce, Bertha HAMILTON married a businessman named William Jack LATTA, who adopted Lester Wilhelm, or Lester William, who, accordingly, was renamed Lester William LATTA. In 1942 or thereabouts, Lester William LATTA married Filomena Teodolina ROBERTO. In 1945 they had a son - viz, me. Robert Lester LATTA. I'm professor of philosophy at Bukkyo (Buddhist) University in Kyoto, Japan, and a write. I have no idea who William Jack LATTA's ancestors might have been, but Bertha HAMILTON was his second wife, and his first was a woman named Mamie LEISH, though this spelling might be incorrect. LATA/ LATTA Hi Alex,  many thanks for your quick answer & explanations! Certainly, "lata" does have a meaning in Spanish: like in  Italian, it means tin or can. And it means a thin metal plate too. If you understand German, "lata" means "Blech" (metal plate) and "Dose" (like a Coke tin - sorry, but my English is not very good; I wish I could speak it like German). It is possible that the name is related to any metal-related occupation, but I don't know anything precise about this (I am starting now with this surname). As far as I know, my Spanish LATA ancestors were fishermen and farmers and lived at the Spanish north coast, near the El Ferrol. Some time ago I read about the possibility of the Spanish LATA branch coming from the British Islands. Apparently, they were fishermen and had to escape from Britain. If so, it is possible that there is a connection between the Spanish and the English/Irish branches. But I wasn't able to find any other details or to corroborate this theory (why they had to escape? And more important: when?). I'll keep you posted if I find anything about this! I had a look at your webpage - lovely! Especially the picture with your great-grandchildren. Definitively, the guy with the protruding ears is a LATA - he was my great-grandfather. I think I can consider me very lucky - my ears look "normal"! I understand why you are so interested in LATA/LATTA pictures: it seems that big, protruding ears are a common family attribute. I could send you some old pictures of my family. I'd be glad to see them posted at your site, if you agree. Just let me know. We keep in touch! Have a good day. Monica, Monica@dorsch-martinelli.com

LATA/ LATTA/ Portugal Dear Sirs, name name is Luis LATA and I'm Portuguese. In Portugal we're just a few named LATA and we're all of the same family. Before my great grandfather there are no records of the name LATA in Portugal, and I don't know the origin of this name. The origin of my family in Portugal is in a small Portuguese town Tamar (center of Portugal). I'm trying to figure the origin of the name and if there's any connection between the name LATA in Portugal and any branch of the name LATTA. The search in Portugal is very difficult since the birth and marriage paper records (located in a church near Tomar) burned in a fire, so it's very difficult to me to find out more. If you think that maybe there's any connection please tell me. Yours faithfully. Luis Lata, l.lata@labvitoria.pt

JUST

Hi, Reddog, I was reading your submission about William Latta and Catherine.  My Latta was a Margaret Just who married P. A. Latta (Br. #40).  Margaret's dad migrated from Ireland about the same time, his name was James Just.  Do you have any information about P. A. Latta.  My website www.djmri.com under Just Genealogy has all the information I have on my Latta's.  Thanks for any help. Dan Just djmri@yahoo.com

LATTA/ ULSTER-SCOTS SOCIETY OF AMERICA The Ulster-Scots Society of America. The Ulster-Scots Society of America is a non-profit, non-sectarian, non-political organization. It is primarily an educational and social organization committed to the promotion of the Ulster-Scots history and heritage, especially as it pertains to the nearly quarter of a million immigrants who left the north of Ireland (Ulster) during the 18th century and settled in America. The majority of these immigrants were the descendants of Lowland Scots who had settled in Ulster four generations earlier. Once in America, these immigrants came to be known as Scotch-Irish (or Scots-Irish). In the British Isles they are known as Ulster-Scots. Today nearly 22 million Americans can trace the roots of at least one family member to these hardy settlers from the north of Ireland. LATTA/ LATTY Not to be critical, but isn't the John LATTA of Branch #51 the same person as John of Branches 12 & 19 combined? Also, on Branch #52, I believe you will find this Thomas Jefferson LATTA was the son of 2 George Washington LATTA (2) in Branch #11. The 1880 Census for Arkansas has T. J. LATTY age 32 b. GA, wife M. and three children: A. J.; W.R., L.B. The wife and first two children were born in Missouri. Also, A. J.'s age matches Andrew Jackson of Branch #52. I thought it was interesting that Eliza HAMILTON, the wife of his son, Claud Allen LATTA, was featured in the Spring issue. Interesting story too. Thank you for your kind attention. Barbara R. JOHNSTON

We have been searching for the burial site and parental information for Jane Latta to no avail.  She married James Johnston, descendant of Mathew William and Frances Jane Belford who immigrated to Westmoreland Co., PA in 1790's with two small children, Sarah and James.  Here's the kicker and maybe a link or connection. Sarah married Moses Latta and we are suspect that Moses and Jane may have been brother and sister.  But we can't find any facts of that anywhere. Here is some of Jane Latta's information: Jane Latta Johnston, b. 1808 PA.  Married James Johnston May 11, 1826. Birth of William Matthew Johnston March 15, 1827, Westmoreland Co., PA Birth of Fannie Jane Johnston February 13, 1829.  Died 8 months after giving birth to Fannie on September 30, 1829.  James remarried to an Anna Gaddis Quail and they had many more children together and resided in Ligonier, PA.  If anyone knows where and how to find Jane Latta, it would be greatly appreciated.  We are also looking for death/burial information for her mother in law, Frances Jane Belford Johnston.  Thanks cousins. LATTA  MILLS ONTARIO CANADA   I own the store/gas/bar on the site of the old Latta store at Latta Mills Ontario, Canada.  I've had so many people asking me questions over the last 8 years or so about the history of the area, including other Latta's visiting from the States a few years back (Michigan area I think).  Unfortunately there was very little written about who first settled at the site, there are only a couple of history books referring to the area and they are very vague.  Any info you or any other Lattas could provide would be of great interest.  Also any pictures anyone has of the old mill or store at Latta would be great. Thanks. Paul, phealy@sympatico.ca
LATTA'S MILL Paul ... nice to hear of your interest in the history of Latta's Mill. (I have noticed that road maps have shown the name of the village as simply Latta, Ontario for some years.) My father was born and raised near the village, and the original mill was built by our ancestor, John Latta, about 1832.
I last visited the mill site in 1987 - have lived in Victoria, BC for the past 25 years. At that time, I took photos of the old mill, the carriage house, etc., and brought home a small piece of limestone from the mill which I use as a "paper weight" on my desk. I have heard that the mill was demolished a few years ago - is this correct? I was hoping that it would be preserved and declared an historical site. I assume the "carriage house" is still there - it appeared to have been converted to a number of townhouses.  I have a Gedcom file (family tree) of our branch 13 which was kindly sent to me by Gary Pokoradi of Hamilton. Gary probably has done more research on the Lattas of branch 13 than any other person. If you have a program that reads Gedcom files, I would be pleased to send a copy of the file to you. During my visit in 1987, I entered a little gift shop which was part of the old mill and was operated by a woman from Toronto. Various souvenir items marked "Latta's Mill" were on display. With great anticipation, I approached the owner and informed her that I was from far away Victoria, was a Latta, and that one of my ancestors had built the original mill 150 years ago. She shrugged and pushed past me as if I was invisible to speak to another customer. Some people are not easily impressed. C'est la vie.
