LATTA/WIGHTON |
This is a
follow-up of an
e-mail to you from
last year. I have
located additional
information and
would like to
share it and
possibly find a
connection.
Marriage in New
Brunswick. John
WIGHTON, Colour
Sargeant of the
72nd Regt.
stationed in
Fredericton,
County of York,
and Catherine
LATTA of the same
place were married
by license at St.
Ann's Chapel
Fredericton, this
twenty-eighth day
of March in the
year of our Lord
1853. Family
letters say that
the family was
from the west of
Scotland and that
Catherine's mother
died and left a
young son and two
daughters. One son
and one daughter
were taken in by
relatives and the
father (possibly
John) brought
Catherine to New
Brunswick. At the
time of her
marriage Catherine
was only 16 years
old. Her husband
was a career
military man and
also served in
India and the West
Indies. They
returned to
Scotland and lived
in Dundee. Any
help would be
greatly
appreciated. |

LATTA/LATTY/
CONNER/ FULLER/
SCOTT |
I am researching
the lineage of
John LATTA/LATTY,
married to Frances
CONNER. I believe
he was the son of
John LATTA and
Martha (?) Frances
SCOTT of
Tennessee. Have
not been able to
document it.
One of the
documents I have
is a sworn
statement by Sarah
Ann FULLER given
to the Cherokee
nation for
application for
the Indian Rolls.
Application
14095-29994. She
claims that she is
the daughter of
Nancy LATTY, who
married a John
LATTY. Claims her
grandmother was
Francis SCOTT
(Martha Frances
SCOTT). Brothers
and sisters of
Nancy LATTY were:
Sarah WEBB (LATTY)
enrolled Lucinda
LATTY, Margot
LATTY, Susan KINER
(LATTY), John
LATTY, *** my
ancestor(??),
Allen Peggy
(probably
Margaret).
Jefferson LATTY...lived
in Chicksaw
Nation. Wash LATTY
(Washington) son
of Diver LATTY.

BLANDFORD/ LATTA |
I'm researching
the history of the
LATTA families of
Vancouver Island,
Canada for a book.
Would like to
contact a
relative(s) of
John BLANDFORD
LATTA from
Victoria, BC. John
served in the
Royal Air Force
during the "Battle
of Britain" in
WWII as a fighter
pilot. He was
awarded the
Distinguished
Flying Cross in
November, 1940 and
was killed in
action in January,
1941. John was
recruited for the
RAF just prior to
the war by a
retired British
Naval Officer
named Captain
Henry
SEYMOUR-BIGGS
living in Victoria
at that time.
BIGGS eventually
recruited 719
local young men to
serve as fighter
pilots in the RAF
- he personally
selected each
recruit and not
one was rejected
by the RAF. They
became widely
known as "BIGGS
Boys." They served
with distinction
during the Battle
of Britain and a
large number were
killed in action.
It is not known
whether BIGGS'
recruitment
activities at that
time were
motivated simply
by patriotism, or
whether he was an
agent of the
British military. |

John ELLIOTT,
1803-1875 married
Sep 15 1825, Mary
"Polly" LATTA,
1796-1837 in 1825,
Butler Co., OH.
His birthplace was
Chester Co., SC.
Hers is unknown.
They had 3
children together:
Joseph LATTA
ELLIOTT,
1827-1919; Esther
Jane ELLIOTT,
1829-1881; and
Ebenzer N.
ELLIOTT, 1831-aft.
1850. Polly and
John ELLIOTT are
my 3rd great
grandparents. I
believe Polly's
father was Joseph
M. LATTA,
1751-1821, and it
is possible her
mother was Mary
McEWEN. He
married, possibly
2 more times, to
Catherine McKINZIE
and to Elizabeth
FORESTER. He died
intestate in
Fairfield Twp.,
Butler Co., OH.
His daughters were
still involved at
the settlement of
his estate in
1831. There may
have been a
surviving son,
Hiram LATTA,
1801-1822. The two
daughters were
Polly ELLIOTT
(above) and Rachel
M. LATTA BOYSE/BOYCE,
wife of Robert
BOYSE. They were
married in 1821,

LATTA/ ROWAN |
I discovered that
I was a LATTA
descendant about
20 years ago on
one of those old
mailing lists -
Genie, I think,
somewhat before
the World Wide Web
came to be. I had
been working on my
ROWAN genealogy,
and had hit a
brick wall. I
placed a query,
because my
GGgrandfather was
named James LATTA
ROWAN, and I had
no idea where the
LATTA came from.
Paul DE BALD, of
Br. 47 responded.
He connected me
and here I am. We
managed to combine
Br. 27 and Br. 47
very shortly after
I found Latta.org
and the
Newsletter. Here
is my unsolved
mystery: The
patriarch of those
two branches was
Thomas LATTA, who
homesteaded land
in the Manor of
the Maske in what
is now Adams
County, PA. The
earliest
documentation is
1765. It is
thought that
Thomas was born in
1727, but I don't
think we know that
for sure either.
Thomas died
intestate in 1796,
and there are
extensive records
from 1796, when he
died until they
finally settled
the estate in the
1820.'s. Thomas'
estate was called
Rapho, which may
connect him to
Ireland, or may
not. Where was
Thomas before he
showed up in the
Manor of the Maske?
My best guess has
always been that
he was the Thomas
mentioned in the
will, dated 1768,
of John LATTA, Br.
19, Lancaster
County, PA. John's
son Thomas was the
executor of his
father's estate.
Thomas' son John
was mentioned in
the will, and
Thomas (27/47) had
a six year old son
named John at the
time of his
father's death.
Thomas had a
brother named
David, who had a
son, Robert named
in the will. A few
years later,
Thomas was
mentioned in the
will of Alexander
JOHNSTON, along
with his wife
Deborah, some of
their children,
and child named
Robert LATTA, who
was not a child of
Deborah and
Thomas. Could he
be the same Robert
who was in John
LATTA's will.
Also, as is usual
in Scotch Irish
naming patterns,
Thomas' oldest son
was named John and
his second son was
Alexander, which
assumes that
Alexander JOHNSTON
was the father of
Deborah LATTA - no
proof there
either. Everything
I found was
linking Thomas to
the original John
LATTA, until I
found a Lancaster
County
Revolutionary War
soldier named
Thomas LATTA.
Thomas of Br.
27/19 fame was a
Captain in the
York County
Militia. The other
Thomas LATTA was a
private in the
Lancaster County
Militia. I believe
that the son of
our Thomas LATTA
was too young to
have been in the
Revolutionary War.
Now the plot
thickens. Has
anyone else found
anything on Pvt.
Thomas LATTA that
would make him the
son of Br. 19
John, or has
anyone found
anything
connecting Br
27/47 Thomas to
John? I figure I
can keep working
on this as long as
I live, but I'm
getting older and
grayer by the
minute. Sure would
be nice to have
some help. Thanks. |

LATTA/ HOCKENBURY |
John LATTA and
Anna Elizabeth
HOCKENBURY, Branch
17: The children
Harriett S. and
Allice were
mentioned in
John's will made
October 7, 1865,
and probated
January 31, 1866.
We have this will
which says in
"Item fourth. - My
other four
children, Samuel
LATTA, Julia A.
POOL, Lucinda
MERCER, George M.
LATTA, and also
Hearriett S. LATTA
and Allice LATTA,
heirs of Abraham
LATTA, all of whom
I here mention as
having received
all that I owe
them to have of my
estate." It is on
the common basis
of including the
children of
deceased heirs in
the wills of the
time that I have
entered Abraham as
a child of John. I
have not been able
to find anything
out about this
Abraham, Heariett
S. or Allice LATTA.
did they stay in
the Huntingdon
County area of PA
when John and
Annie moved to WV
ca 1837 and then
on to Monroe Co.,
OH by 1840? Their
oldest child that
I can find
anything on is
Julia born 1817 in
PA who married
Joseph Poole. Can
anyone help with
this family? |

LATTA/ LATTER/
LEMON |
A mystery for your
newsletter. When I
went to the
shipping records
in July looking
for William LATTA
born in Donegal, I
found the arrival
of John LATTER and
Catherine LATTER
in 1841 on the "Intrinisic."
They arrived into
Port Phillip in
the colony of NSW
(now part of
Melbourne,
Victoria). The
misspelling was
possibly because
they couldn't
write for
themselves and it
was mistranscribed
by an official. I
think this is the
John LATTA born in
1813 whose spouse
was Catherine
LEMON...He may be
my William's
brother and the
parents were John
and Mary (maiden
name???) BUT I
still have no
record for William
LATTA's arrival in
Australia in 1842
and no birth
record or parent
names. Any ideas
of what I should
do? |

LATTA/ CHANDLER/
LOVELACE/ MOORE/
COLLARD |
This is also from
Branch 9 - must
have been a
secretive group!
My ancestor is
Mary Lucinda LATTA
(June 16,
1851-Aug. 11,
1884), daughter of
Thomas Neely LATTA
and Emily
CHANDLER. She was
born in Washington
Co., AR and died
(tradition says of
"milk leg fever")
in Dodd City, TX.
Her two youngest
children by
William Erasmus
LOVELACE, Dwight
Lyman LOVELACE
(Nov 23, 1882 -
Feb 26, 1864) and
Mary LOVELACE,
were sent to live
in Oklahoma with
her youngest
sister, Martha
Jane MOORE (Mrs.
Robert Samuel
Moore). Dwight
came back to live
with his family
around the time
his father
remarried in 1888.
The daughter
remained with her
aunt and uncle.
Further tradition
has it that Mary
LATTA married
Berkley COLLARD,
was a church
organist in the
Dallas/Ft. Worth
area and died of
pneumonia around
1916. I cannot
find her anywhere.
Mary Lucinda LATTA
LOVELACE is buried
in the Inglish
Cemetery in
Bonham, TX and the
grave marker has
the name of Mar
Stella, daughter,
on it. I have
these dates for
her: Sep 1,
1880-Oct. 2, 1903.
She was older than
her brother Dwight
LOVELACE. I had
never heard of
this Mary until I
saw her grave
marker in Bonham.
I had understood
that the child
born at the time
of her mother's
death is the one
who went to her
aunt. Is
this Mary, buried
next to her
mother, the
daughter who lived
with her aunt and
if so, are these
dates correct, and
does tradition
have the death
date wrong? By the
way, I have
photographs of all
(?) of the LATTA
tombstones at the
Dodd City, TX
cemetery if anyone
is interested. |

LATTA/ RILEY |
I have questioned
several times the
possibility of
Branch 7, entry
288 (unknown)
being Wiley F.
LATTA. This would
entail Robert
being married to
Nancy RILEY [June
29, 1827]. My own
problem is the
census carries
more children
[Orange County, NC
1850]. I can find
no other entries
for Wiley but can
follow the lineage
from him to date.
Thanks for any
help. |

I have my well
known mystery with
my LATA Spanish
ancestors.
Probably we will
never find an
answer to the

any proof
connection between

LATTA in Scotland
and Ireland." but
there are many
links between both
zones (see f.i.

LATTA/ JOHNSTON/
WADDELL |
Re:
Research Query
#22, Latta
Genealogy
Newsletter, Issue
26. My GG-grandfather,
Moses LATTA
(Branch #3, Family
#13) married Sarah
JOHNSTON, the
daughter of Mathew
JOHNSTON and
Fannie Jane
BELFORD. Mathew
JOHNSTON was born
in 1777 in
Belfast, County
Down (? most maps
show Belfast in
County Antrim?)
Ireland and came
to the USA about
1799 with his wife
and two small
children. Mathew
JOHNSTON patented
the land next to
Moses LATTA's
father on Sewickly
Creek in South
Huntingdon Twp,
Westmoreland Co.,
PA. A Jane LATTA
married James
JOHNSTON, Sarah's
brother. The
LATTAs are on my
mother's die. On
my father's side I
have WEDDELLS
which I have been
researching for
many years. I
spotted Isabella
JOHNSTON WADDELL
name long ago and
have tried to
identify her first
husband, to no
avail. There is an
unrelated family
of WEDDELL/WADDELL
that appears to
have come from the
Greencastle area
of Franklin County
to Westmoreland
County and settled
in the vicinity of
Derry Twp. They
were most likely
Scotch-Irish. The
point of all my
rambling is that
there is a strong
LATTA-JOHNSTON
connection in the
South Huntingdon,
East Huntingdon
and Mt. Pleasant
Twps of
Westmoreland
County. From the
birth dates it is
possible that
Isabella JOHNSTON
could have been a
sister or cousin
of Mathew
JOHNSTON, and that
Isabella JOHNSTON
or her parents
came from Ireland. |
