________ (1) b. __________; d. before 1883; m. Mary Lewis, daughter of John and Sarah Cordelia Lewis. After his death, Mary Lewis Latta married a WESTHERBY and had at least one child, Mason Cotnam Weatherby, b. in Jackson Co., AL on April 1, 1883. In a Court document dated Jan. 1896, William Latta states that he is Mason's half brother. On Mason's death certificate in 1929, William states that Mason's parents were unknown. Sarah and Mason both mentioned that their mother was half Indian. CHILDREN:

4 JOHN WILLIAM (3) b. May 15, 1871 in Michigan. In 1937 lived in Nashville, TN at 2009 23rd Avenue. William Latta is buried in the Bordeaux Gardens Cemetery on Curtis Street in Nashville, along with his wife, Valerie Ross Latta (maiden name Anglin), daughter of Hughes D. Anglin and Joanah Lewis Anglin. Valerie was born June 15, 1900 in Virginia, and died June 11, 1977. Supposedly, William and Valerie had a daughter named Joan or Joann.

5 SARAH IRENE (3) b. abt. 1868 (seen as Feb. 1871) in Michigan; d. 1917 in Alabama; m. William Marshall Wilkerson abt. 1884.  1906 death cert. of one of her sons states that she was b. in MI in 1871. CHILDREN: Earnest Lee, Claudia Mai, Reuben, George Washington Wilkerson (all born in Alabama), and Charlie, Joseph, and Maggie (born in Nashville). William Wilkerson and wife, Sarah, move back to Jackson Co., AL where Sarah Latta Wilkerson died sometime in 1916 (around the Bass community). Her son, George Washington Wilkerson (July 8, 1895-March 5, 1954) was in the early Grand Ole Opry group known as "The Fruit Jar Drinkers."

Our readers noted that the "William M. Latta" below was Sarah Irene's brother, or may have been her cousin.

1930 Census for William M. Latta states that his father was born in Fran. Canada, and that his mother was born in Michigan.

William M. Latta was married to Rhoda J. Sweeney on June 30, 1889 (Marriage Records Book 9, page 219), and both were working at the National Mfg. Co., a cotton mill in North Nashville. CHILDREN: William Alonza, James Walter, and Georgia Mai Latta.

In the 1910 TN Census, William stated that his father was born in Fran. Canada. (Frankford, Ontario, Canada?)

William and Rhoda were granted a divorce on April 14, 1899 in Nashville. Two months later, a William Latta marries a Dovie Earls on June 10, 1899 and a few months later, Rhoda remarried a William Baldwin. In 1900 Alabama census, Rhoda and the three children are living in Stevenson, AL with her parents. Rhoda's husband, William Baldwin has not been found. For a short while, Rhoda, the children and her parents were found in Huntsville, AL, and by 1903 were living in Chattanooga, TN. Rhoda moved back to Nashville in 1907.

William and Dovie Earls were divorced on Feb. 29, 1908 in Nashville. Less than five days after this divorce, a John William Latta married one Rhoda Sweeney Baldwin.

All three of William and Rhoda Latta's children met with a tragic death. Their youngest son, Walter was a switchman for the Nashville Railroad and was crushed between two boxcars. William, the oldest son, was shot six times outside of Bearden's Pool Room on Murfreesboro Road. William was a federal prohibition officer and newspaper accounts said he was taking hush money from a convicted moon-shiner. Georgia Mai died in a trailer fire in 1971 in Tampa, Florida.
